Leicester Grammar School Florilegium Society

The Florilegium Society was initially set up to document the flora on the new Grammar School site in the form of accurate botanical paintings. It is hoped eventually that as well as the painting there will be a photograph of the plant, a photograph of the location and a detailed description. The paintings and associated information will be displayed in an exhibition.

Valerie Oxley gave the inaugural lecture on ‘Florilegiums, Past and Present' in February 2009. Valerie is Chairman of the Florilegium at the Sheffield Botanic Gardens and a renowned botanical illustrator and teacher. Since then we have had several outside tutors including Valerie who are able to demonstrate different painting techniques or cover a particular subject matter.

Over the last four years we have covered some basic drawing and painting techniques particular to botanical painting in the classes and have painted variety of plants that have been found on the school site. Some of plants which were painted in the first year have sadly now disappeared.

The society meets during term time for painting sessions. In 2014-2015 the meetings will be on Tuesday evenings from 4:15pm – 6:00pm on the following dates:-
